Ending Imperialist Occupation & Genocide is Essential to Ending Gender-Based Violence
On this International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, API Chaya calls on our community of survivors and immigrants to learn about and support Palestinian liberation. We cannot address and end sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking without addressing all forms of state repression and genocide.
Occupation and Genocide are Survivor and Immigrant Issues
API Chaya serves survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking, particularly in the Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander, and all immigrant communities. The immigrants and survivors we serve are bound together by shared experiences of migration and the struggle to survive as marginalized people. Many immigrant survivors flee their homelands due to conditions of poverty, war, genocide, and human rights violations back home. We know that when violence is happening at the hands of the state, when residents are unable to meet their basic needs for food/water/shelter, people are more likely to experience other forms of exploitation and higher levels of violence overall.
When we say we are mobilizing communities to change the conditions which allow gender-based violence and human trafficking to happen, we understand that larger systems of oppression give abusers the framework with which to maintain power and control in the relationship. Oppression provides the model for how to take power over people on an interpersonal level through systemic versions of violence and coercion. Expressions of oppression can be diverse and contradictory, and we embrace the complexity of our world and resist the temptation to flatten and simplify our experiences.
While there have been casualties and horror amongst both the Israeli people and the Palestinian people, we have to look at the patterns of power and control to be able to assess the larger context and systems of what is happening and why it is happening. The state of Israel, backed by the United States for decades has shown patterns of murdering Palestinians, forcefully claiming civilian land, destroying homes, and restricting access to basic necessities such as electricity, clean water, food, and humanitarian aid. There are 75 years of clear repression of Palestinian basic personal and political freedoms.
While we condemn the state of Israel for its inhumane occupation and genocide of Palestinian people, we also condemn the rising anti-semitism across the globe. There are Israeli people who support Palestinian liberation and who do not believe in Zionist frameworks. The solution to the violence against all Palestinian people is not the hatred, demonization, nor blame of all Jewish people. And any acts of violence towards Muslim and Jewish people because of their faith is unconscionable. We grieve with the families of all people alike who suffer from targeted violence and prejudice for their ethnic or religious backgrounds.
Even still, when people are denied the right to exist, there will always be resistance. And we recognize that in the same way survivors sometimes resort to violence in self defense, so too will the Palestinian people fight back against the Israeli government. While all violence and war is horrifying, we have to recognize the difference between fighting to exterminate an entire people, and fighting to survive genocide and occupation.
Join us in solidarity with survivors of sexual and domestic violence and trafficking in Palestine and all countries facing abuse at the hands of state repression and state violence. There are over 30 countries facing war around the world, and we ask you to learn more and be critical of how global conflict is portrayed. Ask yourself, “Who historically holds the power in this conflict between governments? Whose rights are infringed upon? Who is fighting to survive and who wants to exterminate the other?”
What Can We Do About It?
When we hear about the atrocities happening around the world, it can be overwhelming. What could I possibly do in the face of genocide, occupation, and apartheid? Fortunately, Palestinians have called on allies around the world to support the struggle for their liberation, namely, to support their calls to:
call for a ceasefire now
stop the genocide
lift the siege on gaza
end the military occupation
full social, political, and economic rights and freedoms
implementation of the refugee right to return
end imprisonment and carceral torture:
end to desecration of sacred sites
end all U.S. aid to the israeli regime
boycott, divestment, and sanction
stop censorship and criminalization

API Chaya hace un llamamiento a nuestra comunidad de supervivientes e inmigrantes para que conozcan y apoyen la liberación palestina. No podemos abordar y poner fin a la agresión sexual, la violencia doméstica y la trata de personas sin abordar todas las formas de represión estatal y genocidio.

Cuando decimos que estamos movilizando a las comunidades para cambiar las condiciones que permiten que ocurran la violencia de género y la trata de personas, entendemos que sistemas de opresión más amplios brindan a los abusadores el marco con el cual mantener el poder y el control en la relación. La opresión proporciona el modelo de cómo tomar poder sobre las personas a nivel interpersonal a través de versiones sistémicas de violencia y coerción. Las expresiones de opresión pueden ser diversas y contradictorias, y aceptamos la complejidad de nuestro mundo y resistimos la tentación de aplanar y simplificar nuestras experiencias.
Si bien condenamos al Estado de Israel por su ocupación inhumana y el genocidio del pueblo Palestino, también condenamos el creciente antisemitismo en todo el mundo. Hay israelíes que apoyan la liberación palestina y que no creen en los marcos sionistas. La solución a la violencia contra todo el pueblo palestino no es el odio, la demonización ni la culpabilización de todo el pueblo judío. Y cualquier acto de violencia contra musulmanes y judíos a causa de su fe es inconcebible. Lloramos con las familias de todas las personas que sufren violencia selectiva y prejuicios por su origen étnico o religioso.
Aun así, cuando se niega a las personas el derecho a existir, siempre habrá resistencia. Y reconocemos que, del mismo modo que los supervivientes a veces recurren a la violencia en defensa propia, también la gente palestina luchará contra el régimen gubernamental israelí. Aunque toda violencia y toda guerra son horribles, tenemos que reconocer la diferencia entre luchar para exterminar a todo un pueblo y luchar para sobrevivir al genocidio y la ocupación.
Únete a nosotros en solidaridad con los supervivientes de la violencia sexual y doméstica y de la trata de personas en Palestina, Israel y todos los países que sufren abusos a manos de la represión y la violencia estatal. Hay más de 30 países en guerra en todo el mundo, y te pedimos que aprendas más y seas crítico con el modo en que se retratan los conflictos mundiales. Pregúntate: "¿Quién ostenta históricamente el poder en este conflicto entre gobiernos? ¿Qué derechos se vulneran? ¿Quién lucha por sobrevivir y quién quiere exterminar al otro?".
¿Qué podemos hacer al respecto?
Cuando oímos hablar de las atrocidades que ocurren en el mundo, puede resultar en abrumador. ¿Qué podría hacer ante el genocidio, la ocupación y el apartheid? Afortunadamente, los palestinos han pedido a sus aliados de todo el mundo que apoyen la lucha por su liberación, es decir, que apoyen sus llamamientos a:
pedir un alto el fuego ya
detener el genocidio
levantar el asedio a gaza
poner fin a la ocupación militar
plenos derechos y libertades sociales, políticos y económicos
aplicación del derecho al retorno de los refugiados
fin del encarcelamiento y la tortura carcelaria
fin de la profanación de lugares sagrados
fin de toda ayuda estadounidense al régimen israelí
boicot, desinversión y sanciones
acabar con la censura y la criminalización
